Who Was Zubeen Garg?

November 18, 1972 — that was the day he was born in Tura, Meghalaya. Assam, however, was always his home. Jorhat is where he grew up. Singing became his life at a very young age.

Many languages flowed from his voice — Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and more. His Hindi film songs, however, made him famous across India. In addition, his Assamese songs made him a cultural icon in the Northeast.

His most famous songs:

  • “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster (2006) — this song made him a household name
  • “Sun Raha Hai Na Tu” from Aashiqui 2 (2013) — one of the most streamed songs in India
  • “Dil Tu Hi Bataa” from Krrish 3
  • Hundreds of Assamese songs that are still played everywhere in the Northeast

Films also became a part of his journey. In addition, he directed movies. Above all, he was a complete artist.

The Pride of Assam

More than a singer — that is what Zubeen Garg was for the people of Assam. A cultural icon, he became. Common people found their voice in his songs. Love, pain, and the beauty of Assam — he sang about all of it.

Many awards came his way, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for “Ya Ali.” But for him, the love of his people was the biggest award.

Assam in Mourning

Deep grief was expressed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “Assam has lost its heartbeat today,” he said. “Zubeen was not just a singer. He was the soul of our culture.”

A state funeral has been announced by the Assam government. His body will be brought back to Assam from Singapore.

Shops and businesses across Assam have shut down. In Guwahati and Jorhat, people are gathering to pay their respects. Many are crying. Some are singing his songs.

What He Leaves Behind

“I don’t sing for money,” he once said in an interview. “I sing for the people of Assam. If they are happy, I am happy.”

Today, those people are not happy. They are heartbroken.
