We proudly call India one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. But when it comes to women’s safety, we are far behind. We have failed to give women the respect they deserve. We only pretend that women are safe in our country. The truth is the opposite.
In the last four to five days, we have heard things that make your stomach turn. The way some men treated women is shameful, condemnable and an insult to humanity itself. It is a stain on the entire male community.
Recently, cases of rape and assault against women were reported from Bihar, Odisha and Delhi. What is shocking is that the accused were not uneducated men. They were literate, educated people. When an educated person turns into an animal, where exactly are women supposed to feel safe? What is the point of becoming the fastest-growing economy when our own women are not safe here?
Delhi: Three Men Posed as Police and Attacked a Minor
Let’s start with Delhi. A 17-year-old minor girl had gone to the Kalkaji temple with her friend for darshan and puja. Around 7:30 in the evening, the two were walking in Astha Park. The girl was sitting there when three predators approached them. They claimed to be police officers and threatened the couple with arrest. At gunpoint, they dragged the girl to a secluded spot in the park, and all three assaulted her.
One of the accused was a law student. Another was a BSc Mathematics student. A man who knew the law became a predator himself. So the real question is — is an educated person good, or an uneducated one?
Bihar: Girl Returning From Coaching Attacked on the Road
The second case is from Bihar, and it shook the entire state. On 19 September, a minor girl and boy were returning from coaching when a group stopped them on the way. In the video, the two were surrounded, beaten, and the girl was assaulted. After the video went viral, police began action.
According to the police, five people have been arrested so far, three of them minors. On Tuesday, the main accused, Nandan Yadav, was shot in the leg during a police encounter. Yadav was injured while trying to flee.
Odisha: Couple Headed to Shiva Temple Attacked
The third case is from Deogarh district in Odisha. Kapil was riding his bike towards a Shiva temple located on a hill. In the calm, green surroundings, some local men suddenly stopped his bike. The accused began beating the boy while the girl kept crying for help. In the video, the girl is seen begging people again and again to let her go. Even then, the people present treated her badly.
The video of the incident was made and uploaded on social media, where it went viral. Police took note of the matter and arrested three accused.
One Pattern Across All Three Cases
There is one clear pattern in all three incidents — spotting a lone couple, and targeting them in the name of lust, power and so-called morality. In Delhi, the accused pretended to be police to scare their victims.
Why are we becoming like this? How has so much lust built up inside us that we have started hunting our own daughters? She is a human being too. Do not make her a slave to your desires. Look at other women the same way you look at your own sister or daughter.
The biggest question in all of this is — if we lose our humanity, what will we do with the fastest-growing economy? We were not born into this world to become such people. We are here to become good human beings and take society forward.
