We have surged ahead in terms of GDP, yet we are also leading in rape cases. We have entered the 21st century and humans have even walked on the moon, but women in our country remain unsafe; incidents of rape show no signs of declining. Should we call this progress, or is it a reflection of a depraved mindset? Women in India are still not safe; they are afraid to step out of their homes alone at night. Let us look at the five states in India where women are most unsafe.
1. Rajasthan
The highest number of cases—4,871—has been recorded here. This figure is the highest in the country. Additionally, numerous cases of rape against women belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have also been reported in the state.
2. Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh ranks second in the country, with 3,209 cases recorded. It also has the highest total number of crimes against women. Furthermore, the state leads in cases of sexual harassment.
3. Maharashtra
3,091 cases have been recorded in the western state of Maharashtra. The number of sexual harassment cases in the state is also quite high.
4. Madhya Pradesh
A total of 3,061 cases have been registered in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. An increase has also been observed here in cases involving gang rape followed by murder.
5. Haryana
A total of 1,391 cases have been reported in Haryana. Sensitive cases involving crimes against adolescent girls and female children have also been reported in the state.
These figures indicate that challenges regarding women’s safety persist in the country. However, the report also states that data from different states should not be compared solely on the basis of crime statistics.
