I have been working as an accountant for the past 7 years. A stable job, a fixed salary, and a decent life. However, like every human being, I wanted more. Extra income, a better lifestyle, and wealth — these became my goals.
And that’s when I heard about Cryptocurrency.
Everywhere I looked — YouTube, Instagram, Telegram — people were making money from crypto. “Trade smart, earn daily,” they said. “Financial freedom is just one trade away,” they claimed. As a result, I got curious. I started watching YouTube videos to understand how people actually make money from crypto.
That curiosity became my entry point. Eventually, it became my biggest regret.
How It All Started — December 2024
In December 2024, I downloaded the Delta Exchange India app, completed my KYC, and started trading. I began with a small capital of ₹5,000.
I took 2–3 trades in futures, and surprisingly, I made a profit of ₹300–₹400. It felt amazing. The thought crossed my mind, “This is easy. Why isn’t everyone doing this?”
Within one week, I grew my capital from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Moreover, I started trading daily. I was mostly trading Ethereum. In just one week, I made a profit of ₹6,000–₹7,000.
I was on top of the world. I felt confident. I felt smart. In fact, I felt like I had finally found the shortcut to wealth.
The Dangerous Trap of Overconfidence
That confidence turned into overconfidence — and that’s where the disaster began.
A thought struck me: “If I can make ₹7,000 with ₹10,000, imagine what I can do with ₹20,000.”
So, I increased my capital to ₹20,000.
The logic seemed simple — more capital = more profit. However, what I didn’t understand was that more capital = more risk, especially when you don’t know what you’re doing.
One day, it happened. Instead of profit, I started seeing loss. My capital dropped by ₹5,000. As a result, I panicked.
The Worst Decision of My Life
Instead of stopping and thinking, I did what every emotional trader does — I added more money.
More Ethereum was purchased, hoping the loss would recover. But as funds were added, my liquidation price changed. The thought was, “If I keep buying, the loss will disappear.”
Therefore, I did the unthinkable.
I broke my ₹1 lakh Fixed Deposit.
All of that money went into buying Ethereum. I thought the market would bounce back. I thought I could recover everything.
However, the loss didn’t stop. It kept growing. Soon, I was staring at a ₹35,000 loss.
I was terrified. My hands were shaking. My mind was blank. And then — the market crashed.
Ethereum dropped over 100 points. My entire capital was liquidated.
Total loss: ₹1 lakh.
The same person who was celebrating a ₹7,000 profit one week ago was now crying over a ₹1 lakh loss.
The Emotional Breakdown
I cried. I felt guilty. I felt stupid. I kept asking myself, “What have I done?”
That ₹1 lakh wasn’t just money — it was years of savings, my emergency fund, my hard-earned FD. Moreover, I lost it all in a matter of days.
The guilt was too painful. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t focus on my job. I felt like I had failed myself and my family.
The Mistakes I Made — And You Must Avoid
Looking back, I realize my mistakes were very clear. If I had known these things before, I would have never lost a single rupee.
1. I Didn’t Understand Spot vs Futures vs Options
I had no idea what Spot trading, Futures trading, and Options trading actually meant. I just jumped into Futures because that’s what everyone on YouTube was doing.
👉 If I had stuck to Spot trading, I would have never lost my capital. Spot trading means you buy and hold real crypto — there’s no liquidation.
2. I Didn’t Understand Leverage
This was the biggest killer. I was trading with 50x leverage.
What does 50x leverage mean? It means even a 2% drop in price can wipe out your entire capital.
I had no idea. I thought leverage was a tool to make more money. However, in reality, it’s a double-edged sword — and for beginners, it’s dangerous.
👉 If I had understood leverage, I would have never used 50x. I would have used 1x or 2x at most.
3. I Never Used Stop Loss
I didn’t know what a Stop Loss was. I didn’t know that you can set a limit — “If the price drops to this point, automatically sell and save my remaining capital.”
If I had used a Stop Loss, my loss would have been small and controlled.
👉 Stop Loss is your seatbelt. Without it, one crash can end everything.
4. I Didn’t Know About Buy AND Sell
This sounds basic, but I didn’t know that you can make money both ways — when the price goes up (Buy/Long) and when the price goes down (Sell/Short).
I only knew how to “Buy.” Therefore, when the market crashed, I had no idea how to profit from it. I just watched my money disappear.
👉 Learn both sides of the market. Crypto isn’t just about buying and hoping.
5. I Let Emotions Control My Decisions
This is the most dangerous mistake of all.
- I was greedy when I was making profit.
- I was panicked when I was making a loss.
- I added more money out of desperation.
- I broke my FD out of fear.
Every decision I made was emotional, not logical.
👉 Trading is 20% strategy and 80% psychology. If you can’t control your emotions, you will lose — no matter how much you know.
What I Learned — And What You Must Know Before Investing
This loss taught me lessons that no YouTube video ever could. Let me share them with you, so you don’t make the same mistakes:
- Never invest money you can’t afford to lose. Never break your FD, never touch your emergency fund.
- Learn before you earn. Understand Spot, Futures, and Options before putting in a single rupee.
- Leverage is not your friend. As a beginner, stay away from high leverage.
- Always use Stop Loss. Protect your capital first; profit comes later.
- Don’t chase losses. Adding more money to recover a loss is the fastest way to lose everything.
- Control your emotions. Greed and fear are your biggest enemies.
- Start small. Stay small. Grow slow. There’s no shortcut to wealth.
My Message to Every Beginner
Losing ₹1 lakh in just two weeks was painful. However, the lesson learned is worth much more than that.
If you’re reading this and thinking about entering crypto — please don’t repeat my mistakes.
Crypto is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a high-risk market that requires knowledge, patience, and discipline. Without these three, you will lose your money — just like I did.
Learn first. Understand the risks. Never use leverage you don’t understand. Always use Stop Loss. And most importantly — never invest money that you can’t afford to lose.
I’m sharing my story not to scare you, but to warn you. Because I don’t want anyone else to cry the way I cried.
